Joan Dosso, M.A., M.T.S.
Registered Clinical Counsellor, #2410
Joan brings compassion, creativity, and a playful spirit to her clients and the therapeutic process. She draws on expressive arts techniques such as sand tray, clay work, play therapy, guided imagery, and writing (journaling, narrative, poetry) to encourage clients to use their creativity to shift their perspective, tell their life story in a more positive way and discover hope sprouting from the decaying remains of loss.
Joan works with individuals affected by anxiety, depression, grief, low self-esteem, shame, eating disorders, OCD, spiritual questions, identity, relationship issues and life transitions. When working with couples she uses an Emotionally Focused therapy approach. Through her 8 years of co-leading a faith-based support group for those suffering from mood-disorders, Joan has developed a particular interest and ability to walk compassionately alongside those living with a mental illness to help them accept their limits, lead meaningful lives, and creatively work towards growth.
Joan particularly enjoys working with students, having taught music at an international high school in Germany for 3 years, and at a college in Ontario for 7 years, and through running a student internship program at the church where she has been Pastor of Worship Arts for the past 12 years. Joan understands the student mindset first hand having returned to studies herself a few times throughout her teaching career to obtain a MMus in choral conducting, a Masters of Theological Studies, and a MA in Pastoral Counselling and Psychology from St. Stephen’s College in Edmonton. Joan is a Registered Clinical Counsellor who counsels part time at Arbour while continuing to work part-time as an ordained pastor specializing in Worship Arts at Emmanuel Baptist in Victoria.
Joan has in interest in many art forms and in addition to her training and performing as a flutist and conductor, is a writer of scripts and poetry, and loves to make pottery on the wheel in her home studio. Joan loves the natural beauty of the west coast and explores it most happily in her kayak or swimming (yes, in the ocean!).
