CALVIN BLACK

M.A.

Registered Clinical Counsellor #11347

(he/him)

Calvin is a Registered Clinical Counsellor who works with children and youth, adults, and couples.  He has special interest and proficiency working with men who struggle with anxiety, depression, and past trauma.  Calvin has substantial experience in care for people through his previous role as a pastor at the Victoria Church of the Nazarene where he served for over 24 years. He brings a warm presence and curiosity that helps people make sense of their situation and move beyond their problems.

Calvin uses Narrative Therapy as a primary mode of helping clients through their present struggles to fresh perspectives. Narrative Therapy highlights the ways in which we can give certain details of our experience more importance than might be warranted. Sometimes we even begin to describe ourselves in limiting ways which don't fully account for more generous accounts of who we are and can be. These kinds of perspectives inform conversations where Calvin and his clients co-create new narratives of identity, solutions, and understanding.

Calvin received his M.A. in Counselling Psychology from the University of Victoria in 2013 and also holds a Bachelor of Theology and a Bachelor of Religion from the University of Manitoba. Calvin completed the Advanced Level of Narrative Discovery with the Vancouver School of Narrative Therapy in 2018. He is a certified coach with Nazarene Strengths Institute and leads workshops for community groups and organizations looking to improve their leadership teams.

Calvin grew up in Victoria and returned shortly after completing his undergraduate studies in Winnipeg. His wife Ceri is a schoolteacher in Victoria and they have three children. He enjoys running, hockey, and soccer as well as reading philosophy, psychology, and theology.
